Capsule endoscopy is a transformative diagnostic technique that allows physicians to visualize the gastrointestinal (GI) tract using a swallowable, pill-sized camera. This innovation has significantly improved the ability to detect abnormalities in regions that are difficult to access with traditional endoscopic procedures, especially the small intestine. Capsule endoscopy is painless, minimally invasive, and requires no sedation, making it a preferred option for patients who cannot undergo conventional endoscopy.



How Capsule Endoscopy Works

The procedure uses a tiny capsule embedded with a miniature camera, LED lights, batteries, and a wireless transmitter. After the patient swallows the capsule, natural peristalsis moves it through the GI tract. As it travels, the capsule captures thousands of high-resolution images—often two to six frames per second—transmitting them wirelessly to a data recorder worn by the patient.

Once the procedure is complete, the capsule is naturally excreted. The recorded images are then analyzed by specialists to identify abnormalities such as bleeding, ulcers, tumors, or signs of inflammatory disease.
